Sports massage is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments. Sports massage is ideal for treating sports injuries as well as a preventative treatment and deals with the health of muscle and connective tissue, range of movement, tone, symmetry, balance of muscle and quality of posture.

Sports Massage may help to alleviate the tension and stress of sports-related injuries and assist in the prevention of injury before and after a sporting event. We use soft tissue massage and stretching, trigger-point therapy, kinesio taping, and exercise prescription as part of your treatment.

It is not only limited to sportspersons, but for anyone who enjoys an active lifestyle. So whether you’re a swimmer, a runner, a cyclist, a racket sports fan or a weight lifter, we can help!

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is utilised in sports therapy/massage because targets chronic tension in muscles that lie far below the body’s surface. Deep muscle techniques involve slow strokes, direct pressure or friction movements that go across the muscle grain.

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation.

Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement.

Massage therapists will use their fingers, thumbs or occasionally even elbows to apply the needed pressure. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders.

Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.

Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as: chronic pain, limited mobility, recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury), repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis pain, fibromyalgia, and muscle spasms.

What are the main benefits of a sports massage?

A specialised sports massage helps to alleviate muscle tension, improve your flexibility, and speed up recovery following physical activity. It is an excellent, evidence-led approach for both injury rehabilitation and preventative healthcare.

I brought my 5 year old to see Tara after the dentist expressed concerns about her teeth grinding. With Tara's help and guidance along with her skilled adjustments week on week, we are now at a place where our daughter is sleeping better and is much more regulated day to day than before. Tara explained each step in the treatment plan as well as what she was treating and why. She also encouraged us to go to our GP for a referral for another issue that she picked up during the course of treatment to make sure we had a full picture. Not only is Tara very skilled as a Chiropractor she is also kind and compassionate and patient - which with kids is incredibly important!

I'd been struggling with plantar fasciitis for several years and various treatments I'd tried had only helped temporarily. The condition was very painful and badly affecting both my sleep and daytime activities. I saw Ashleigh Phelps at The Lansdown Clinic, who has been amazing, knowledgeable, informative, kind and helpful. Her attention to detail is most evident. I'm so glad I made that initial appointment and have been very impressed by the professional and caring way that Ashleigh looked after me. Having completed the course of visits the pain has reduced significantly and life's much better as a result. With continued use of the exercises Ashleigh recommended I'm confident things will be good from now on. I can thoroughly recommend Ashleigh and The Lansdown Clinic. The clinic has a very relaxed atmosphere and everyone I've had contact has been very friendly and welcoming, starting with the lovely receptionists. They've got excellent premises with parking right outside too. Thanks Ashleigh, you're amazing!

Tara has managed to do what many physios osteopath and other chiropractors couldn’t - I am pretty much pain-free. I am beyond grateful for all the help Tara has given to me, she is exceptional and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone.

I've been going for years for regular "maintenance sessions" with Tara, helps keeps me moving and flexible, working on "proaction is better than reaction"! There's also been times when my neck / back have flaired up and have managed to get an appointment really quickly and sorted me just as fast! Can't rate the team highly enough, very pleasant to deal with.

I went here with a bad back and groin, and was helped tremendously by Hayley. I’m on a path to get my hip (which was the main issue I didn’t know about) fixed thanks to the work by Hayley. Highly recommend!
